# Configure collection data source

Normally, a filter option's values come from product properties, tags, variant options, or metafields. A **Collection** data source instead builds a filter option's values from your store's **collections** — useful for a "Shop by category" style filter built from collections you already maintain.

## Build a collection tree with sub-collections

Turn on **Build a collection tree with multi-level sub-collections** to show a collection's sub-collections as nested filter values (e.g. a "Category" option listing "Men", "Women", "Kids" as sub-levels) — see [Add sub-collections to filter option](/filters/filter-options/configure-collection-data-source/add-sub-collections-to-filter-option.md).

## Values shown

Use the same **Values > Type** and **Sort** controls as any other filter option (see [Manage filter option values](/filters/filter-options/configure-filter-options/manage-filter-option-values.md)) to control which collections appear and in what order.

By default, only collections with at least one matching product are shown. To always show every collection you've selected regardless of current matches, see [Display all collection values in filter option](/filters/filter-options/configure-collection-data-source/display-all-collection-values-in-filter-option.md).
