# Split products

**Split products** takes one product that has variants — like a hoodie in five colours and four sizes — and turns *each variant into its own Shopify product*. Optionally, it then re-groups those new products into a single [combined listing](/globo-combined-listings/product-groups/product-groups.md), so shoppers still see one product with swatches to choose from.

It's the fastest way to go from a single multi-variant product to the "separate products, one listing" setup that Combined Listings is built around.

<figure><img src="/files/HF4uuwzxRI7Se0dVJysO" alt="The Split products page with its empty state illustration and a New split button"><figcaption><p>Find it in the app's left navigation under <strong>Split products</strong>.</p></figcaption></figure>

## Why split a product?

Splitting is useful when each variant deserves to stand on its own — while still being shown together:

* **Its own page and URL** — better for SEO and for sharing a direct link to one colour.
* **Its own images in search and collections** — a collection page shows the red jacket *as red*, not whichever variant happens to be first.
* **Its own inventory and pricing** — track and price each colour separately.
* **A combined listing, automatically** — the app can create the group for you, so the storefront still shows one product with option swatches.

{% hint style="success" %}
**Your original products are never deleted.** Splitting only *creates* new products. The original is left untouched — or archived, if you choose that option — so you can always undo.
{% endhint %}

## Before you start

* Splitting is available for products with **2 or more variants** that aren't **already in a group**.
* Splitting runs **in the background**. You can close the page or keep working while it finishes.
* Each new product inherits the original's images, price, inventory, availability, and more — see [what each new product keeps](#what-each-new-product-keeps).

## Step 1 — Start a new split

Open **Split products** from the app navigation and click **New split**. Pick the products you want to split.

<figure><img src="/files/jVa1uiZwAK0i8ekuLyGm" alt="The Select products to split dialog with filters for 2+ variants and not-in-a-group"><figcaption><p>The picker only offers products that can be split. Search, then select one or many.</p></figcaption></figure>

The picker filters to eligible products for you:

| Filter              | Meaning                                                                |
| ------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Has 2+ variants** | Single-variant products have nothing to split.                         |
| **Not in a group** | A product already in a combined listing is tagged and can't be picked. |

Products that were already split, are archived, or have a single variant are labelled so you know why they're unavailable.

## Step 2 — Review and choose your options

Your selected products appear in a list, each showing how many new products it will create (**→ 20 products**). On the right, set how the split should behave.

<figure><img src="/files/kVz1vEJtBZPmNiqSWFRG" alt="The New split page: selected products on the left, split settings and summary on the right"><figcaption><p>Set titles, status, grouping, and archiving before you split. The summary shows exactly how many products and groups you'll create.</p></figcaption></figure>

| Setting                                   | What it does                                                                                                                                                         |
| ----------------------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Product titles**                        | How each new product is named. `Title — Value`, `Title (Value)`, `Title Value`, or a custom separator. A live preview shows the result, e.g. *Alpine Hoodie — Navy*. |
| **New product status** | **Active** (live immediately), **Draft** (hidden until you publish), or **Same as original**. |
| **Create a group for each split product** | Automatically build a combined-listing group from the product's options (like Color and Size) so the new products show as one listing. |
| **Archive originals after splitting** | Archive each original once its split finishes successfully. Archived products are hidden from your storefront but kept in your admin. |

{% hint style="info" %}
Leave **Create a group** on if your goal is a combined listing. Turn it off if you only want the separate products and will group them yourself later.
{% endhint %}

## Step 3 — Split

Click **Split&#x20;*****N*****&#x20;products** and confirm. Splitting starts immediately and runs in the background.

<figure><img src="/files/6r68qsAiZ05Kjyixra6r" alt="The confirmation dialog summarising how many products will be created and what happens to the originals"><figcaption><p>A final summary before anything is created — including what happens to your originals.</p></figcaption></figure>

## Step 4 — Watch it finish

You land back on the Split products list, where a banner tracks progress and every product shows a live status.

<figure><img src="/files/WTumL2zCOU8wvu0KRA4k" alt="The Split products list with a Splitting progress banner and per-product statuses"><figcaption><p>Splitting runs in the background — leave the page and come back any time.</p></figcaption></figure>

| Status         | Meaning                                                                                                                                                                                                 |
| -------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Queued**     | Waiting to start.                                                                                                                                                                                       |
| **Splitting…** | Being split right now.                                                                                                                                                                                  |
| **Split** | Finished. Its new products (and group) are ready. |
| **Reverting…** | The split is being undone right now. |
| **Reverted** | The split was undone — the products it created and the group are gone, and the original is back. See [Manage and undo splits](/globo-combined-listings/split-products/manage-splits.md#revert-a-split). |
| **Failed** | Something went wrong — use **Retry** on the row to run it again. |

When a product finishes, use **View group** on its row to open the combined listing the split created.

## What each new product keeps

Every new product is a faithful copy of its variant:

* **Title** — the original title plus the variant value, in the format you chose.
* **Images, price, and SKU** — carried over from the variant.
* **Inventory** — the variant's stock and tracking settings are copied (your original is never changed).
* **Availability** — published to the same sales channels as the original.
* **Product details** — the meta description and product category come along too.

Collections and metafields aren't copied — add those afterwards if you need them.
