Overview

All 32 option types, grouped into three families, with what each type is used for and where it’s supported.

An option’s type determines what customers do with it — enter text, make a selection, or simply read it — and which settings are available.

There are 32 option types across three families.

If you are not sure which to use, start with Choose the right option type.

What every type shares

Whatever the type, the settings panel is organized the same way:

Tab
Contains

Basic

Label, Name, Required field, option values, limits, help text, and the add-on Price field.

Advanced

Layout, column width, prefixes, out-of-stock handling, slider settings, HTML class, and the Add-on quantity dropdown.

Personalizer

Available on the 12 types that support it — see the tables above.

Translations

Every translatable field in the option set, per storefront language. See Translate option content.

Every setting that appears on multiple types is documented once in Shared settings. The individual type pages list the settings available for that type and explain only what is specific to it.

Conditional logic is available on all 32 types, including the static ones — so you can show a whole Section, a size chart, or a warning paragraph only under certain conditions. See Conditional logic.

Two things to check before choosing

POS. Dimension and Product links do not work in the Shopify POS app, and the app warns you when you add them. If you sell in person, avoid both. See POS limitations.

Add-on pricing. Where the price lives depends on the shape of the type. Input types take one price for the whole option; selection types take a price per value. A few types cannot carry a price at all. See Where you can set add-ons.
