# Manage search fields

Control which parts of your product data are searched, and how much weight each one carries in ranking results.

## What this does

Only checked fields are actually searched — if a shopper's query only matches text in a field that's unchecked, that product won't show up as a result at all. For example, with only **Title** checked, searching "cotton" only matches products with "cotton" in the product title; checking **Description** as well would also surface products that mention cotton in their description text but not their title.

The order of the checked fields controls ranking, not just matching: fields higher in the list carry more weight when Search decides which matching product to rank first. Moving **Vendor** above **Title**, for instance, would let a vendor-name match outrank a title match for the same query.

## Steps

1. In the app, go to **Search > Settings**.
2. Under **Product fields to search**, check the fields you want included in search — Title, SKU, Product option, Vendor, Product type, Product Tag, Description, Collection title, Metafield (see [Search products by metafield](/search/search-products-by-metafield.md) for the metafield option).
3. Drag a field up or down to make it more or less prioritized in ranking — fields higher in the list carry more weight.
4. Click **Save** in the bar at the top of the page.

## Tips

* Turning on **SKU** is useful if shoppers often search by product code.
* Keep the list focused on fields shoppers actually search with — adding low-value fields (like a long description) too high in priority can push more relevant matches (like Title) further down.
