# Synonyms settings

Terms your customers search with don't always match how you describe your products.

## What this does

A shopper's search terms don't always match your product copy word-for-word — a shopper who types "bikini" won't find a product page that only ever says "swimsuit". **Synonyms** close that gap by connecting related search terms, so a search for one also surfaces results for the other, without you having to rewrite any product titles or descriptions.

## Configure synonyms

1. In the app, go to **Search > Synonyms**.
2. Click **Add synonym**.
3. Enter the **Queries** this synonym applies to (e.g. `Tablet`).
4. Choose the **Relationship** type — see below.
5. Enter the **Synonyms** — related terms, comma-separated (e.g. `iPad, i-Pad, Samsung Galaxy Tab`).
6. Click **Save** in the bar at the top of the page.

Synonym changes take effect after the next sync — see [Sync Product Data](/getting-started/sync-product-data.md) if you want them live immediately.

## Bulk import/export via CSV

Use **Import** / **Export** on the Synonyms page to manage a large number of synonym groups at once.

## Understanding synonym relationships

There are two relationship types, and choosing the right one matters:

* **Equivalence** — a two-way relationship. "When your customers search for the items of 'bikini', you also want to display more products namely 'swimsuits', 'beachwear' and vice versa." Use this when the terms are genuinely interchangeable in both directions.
* **Inferred** — a one-way relationship. "A search for 'tablet' will also find 'ipad pro', 'samsung galaxy tab', 'microsoft surface pro'. However, you wouldn't want iPad Pro showing up when someone does a search for 'samsung galaxy tab' or 'microsoft surface pro'." Use this for a broad term that should surface several specific products, without those specific terms triggering each other.
