# Assign images to option values

Decide which product images belong to which option value.

## Pick a product

1. Go to **Assign images**.
2. Click **Configure new product** and choose a product.

The product must have real variants — a product with only a default variant can't be configured.

The list page shows every product you've configured, with its image, title, media count and when it was last updated. Use **Search products** to find one, **Edit** to open it again, and **Delete** to remove its configuration.

## Assign the images

The editor shows one row per option value, and all of the product's media at the bottom under **Shared across all variants**.

* Drag an image from the shared area onto a value's row to make it specific to that value.
* Drag images between rows to move them.
* Drag within a row to reorder.
* Drag an image back down to share it with every variant again.
* Or click **Assign images** on a row and tick the images in the picker.

An empty row prompts you: *Drag images here from below, or use Assign images.*

Click **Save** when you're done. Saving also turns on image grouping for your store, so the product page gallery follows the selected swatch — see [Group images by swatch](/swatch/assign-images/group-images-by-swatch.md).

## Products with more than one option

If the product has several options, the editor shows a segmented control with one tab per option — **Color**, **Size**, **Model** and so on. Each tab has one row per value of that option.

You can use the same image under more than one option (a photo can belong to both "Blue" and "Large"), but not under two different values of the same option. Images that are already taken by another value of the same option appear dimmed, badged **In use**, and can't be selected.

When several options are in play, a variant's gallery is the **intersection** of the images you assigned for each of its values, followed by the shared images. Order follows the first option in your product's option list in Shopify.

Once you've assigned images in at least two options, a preview panel appears showing what each combination will produce. Rows with nothing in common are flagged so you can fix them.

For the gallery to change with every option on the storefront — including options shown as buttons or a plain dropdown — turn on **Use dynamic variant image** in **Settings → Swatch on Product Page**. See [Use dynamic variant image](/swatch/settings/swatch-on-product-page.md#use-dynamic-variant-image).

## Advanced settings

Two checkboxes at the bottom of the editor push your arrangement back into Shopify:

| Setting | What it does |
| -------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Overwrite main variant images in Admin (recommended)** | Replace each variant's main image with the first image you assigned to it. Off, existing variant images are left alone. |
| **Overwrite image orders in Admin (recommended)** | Apply this page's ordering to the product's gallery in Shopify. |

Both are worth leaving on for a consistent result across your storefront, your Shopify admin and any channel reading your product data.
