Product groups overview

Group Products as Variants allows you to link separate Shopify products together and display them as variant options on your storefront.

Sometimes a "variant" is really a separate product: each colour has its own inventory, its own photos, its own description — and you want each one indexed by Google under its own URL. Shopify's variants can't do that; product groups can.

A product group links separate products and shows them as an option picker on each of their product pages. A shopper clicking a swatch goes to that product's own page.

When to use a product group instead of variants

Use variants when one product simply comes in several colours or sizes.

Use a product group when:

  • each colour or model needs its own URL for search engines;

  • the products have genuinely different descriptions, specs or price points;

  • you already created them as separate products and don't want to merge them;

  • you're bumping into Shopify's variant limits.
