Sort products by Metafield

Want to let customers sort your products by values like “Release Date”, “Popularity”, or any other custom field? You can do this using Shopify Metafields and the Smart Product Filter & Search app.
Here’s how to enable sorting based on a metafield — and how to remove it from the sorting dropdown later if needed.
Open the Smart Product Filter & Search app in your Shopify Admin.
From the left menu, click Settings → go to the Metafields tab.
Click Add Field → Choose Metafield.
Enter your metafield namespace and key (e.g., custom.material
).
Under Applies to:
Ensure to enable the Sort option so that customers can sort product data by this metafield.
Click Add, then Save your changes.
If you no longer want customers to sort products using that metafield:
Go back to the metafield settings in Smart Product Filter & Search app.
Uncheck the “Sort” option.
Save the changes.
By doing that, the sort option will automatically be removed from the app’s sorting dropdown.
Let’s say you have a metafield called custom.release_date
. If the Sort option is enabled, customers can choose “Sort by Release Date” on the storefront. Disabling that option will hide it from the dropdown.
